This tour was created by three Break Through Tech DC at UMD Springterns under the guidance of Capitol Interactive and lead curator Shellée M. Haynesworth (Indigo Creative Works and Executive Producer/Creator, Black Broadway on U Project) who deeply understands the critical role technology plays in preserving/telling Black history and stories to better engage with diverse audiences. Since its launch in 2014, the Black Broadway on Project’s mission has been to chronicle and preserve the under told history of DC’s storied Black U Street community once known as “Black Broadway” cross multiple mediums and platforms for sharing family and community histories; and to promote Black Broadway’s culture legacy and the significant contributions and impact its residents have had on the nation’s capital and the American experience at-large.
Break Through Tech DC works at the intersection of academia and industry to propel more underrepresented women into computer science degrees and tech jobs. Through curriculum innovation, career access, and community building, our goal is to achieve gender equality in tech.
