Camille A. Brown: Giant Steps receives nomination from the 56th NAACP Image Awards!

AND THE NOMINATIONS ARE IN…

Our team at Indigo Creative Works is beyond thrilled to be nominated by the 56th NAACP Image Awards for our short documentary Camille A. Brown: Giant Steps in the Outstanding Short Form Documentary (Film) category. For my co-director, Michelle Parkerson, and me, capturing Camille’s groundbreaking journey within a 15-minute film was both a privilege and a challenge, reflecting her profound cultural influence on Broadway and beyond.

Camille’s choreography transcends physical movement, weaving rich stories and histories into every performance. Drawing from African, Caribbean, and American cultural traditions, her work deeply explores Black identity and heritage. This thematic richness provided a compelling foundation for our film, which aimed to portray not just her creative process but also the essence of her artistic vision.

Employing a cinéma-vérité approach with handheld shooting, Michelle and I mirrored the dynamism and intensity of her choreography, capturing its rhythmic and emotional complexity. We are incredibly grateful to our production partners, PBS American Masters and Firelight Media, for their unwavering guidance and support of our film. We are extremely honored that our meaningful and collaborative work has been recognized with this prestigious NAACP Image Awards nomination.
