NMAAHC Digital Treasures: Daufuskie Island and Beyond!

National Museum African American History and Culture Digital Treasures: Daufuskie Island and Beyond! presented on Thursday, October 20, 2022, from 2:00PM - 3:00PM EDT, explored the resiliency and preservation of Gullah Geechee history and heritage. This culturally rich, virtual Program illuminated the beauty of Daufuskie Island, SC, and the surrounding Gullah communities. From the Gullah Geechee experience, the Program participants witnessed the sage wisdom of the oldest living descendant from Daufuskie, spirited Ring Shout performances, African American women quilters forging their legacies for their youth, and awe-inspiring tours of this magical South Carolina Lowcountry island hosted by sixth-generation native Sallie Ann Robinson (seen in the Netflix series, High on the Hog) a traditional Gullah meal, opening remarks from Lonnie G. Bunch III (14th Secretary, Smithsonian Institution), and more.
